Habitat for Humanity of Orange County changes lives by bringing together God’s people and resources to help families in need build and own quality affordable homes in safe and supportive communities.
It was amazing that in 8 hours, a 15 person volunteer team with little or no experience and 2 construction Superintendents were able to frame the entire first floor of a soon to be completed home in Santa Ana.
The crew consisted of the owner Rick Rengel, of Rengel + Co Architects, his staff of Architects and their families and Colleen Howes the owner of SABP Reprographics. It was a unique experience for the team to actually realize what it was like to build what is designed and printed on the plans. The volunteers carried lumber, operated power saws, manually hammered over 5000 nails, and physically raised the walls of the 3 bedroom 2 bath home is located at 1314 North Eastwood Avenue. According to the Superintendent Casey Murphy the home is expected to be completed by July 2014.

Raising the First Wall
Habitat offers home ownership to hardworking families who may otherwise be unable to purchase a home of their own. Habitat homeowners purchase their home directly from Habitat through a zero-interest, 20-year loan.
Habitat homeowners build equity through owning their own home. All Habitat homeowners are required to invest 325 hours of sweat equity during the construction of their home and the homes of other Habitat families. Homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build more Habitat homes!
Applicants must have one of the following housing needs:
- Substandard – structurally unsound or dilapidated housing; broken plumbing; faulty wiring; poor heating; leaking roof; etc.
- Cost-Burdened – rental payments are 33% or more of your total income.
- Overcrowded – adult and child share a bedroom; more than two children share a bedroom; two children of opposite sexes share a bedroom.
Applicants must be able to meet the following requirements:
- Live or work in Orange County for at least one year
- Demonstrate stable income for the past two years
- Afford one-time closing costs of $1700.
- Earn 60% or less than the area median income.
- Have no unpaid judgments nor medical collections more than $1000.
- Be willing to perform 325 hours of sweat equity, partnering with Habitat to help build your home and other Habitat homes.
